10 Obscure Manga that are my favorites

1. The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses

This one is leading the list because it got an anime adaptation recently so people might actually know what it is. The premise is right there in the title but unlike a lot of other "premise" romance mangas it actually does move into real character development beyond silly 4koma gags. Very sweet and heartwarming 8.8/10

2. Tsuka no Ma no Ichika

A young woman meets up with her old college professor and they come to an understanding about mortality together. I won't say any more than than but it is a beautiful and very short story. 9/10

3. I Want to Cry with You on Thursday (Mokuyoubi wa Kimi to Nakitai)

Relatively short manga about a boy who is forced to live a false life and a girl who is his opposite. I wish it was a little longer but I really liked the characters and resolution. 8.4/10

4. Lonely Alien (Hitoribocchi no Chikyuu Shinryaku)

One of my top 10 favorite mangas, for sure. Read this if you're looking for a very innocent, sweet, genuine kind of adventure story. A boy meets a girl who's actually an alien in disguise and has come to take over the earth, and she needs his help. There's also a weird cat thing! Also the story uses The Little Prince for epitaphs so you have to like it, legally. 9.6/10

5. Our Happy Hours

A very short but sweet manga about a pianist who attempted suicide connecting with a prisoner on death row. Definitely a very mature subject and maybe not for everyone but the ending is so beautiful it hurts. 8.2/10

6. 100 Ghost Stories Before I Die

The darkest manga on this list for sure. Definitely not for everyone. A boy sits in his room, telling ghost stories one at a time. At first, the interest is in the stories themselves, which start off VERY strong, and continue to be so throughout the series run. These are some of the most terrifying short little stories I've ever read, and a few bittersweet sad ones too. However, it slowly becomes apparent that there's a story going on in the frame as well, and that something is haunting the boy. It's a ride. 8.6/10

7. Record of My Wife the Villainess

Yeah I know the title I typed isn't correct, but hear me out: I ain't typing all that lol. This was a rec from a friend outside of my normal tastes that I really liked! It's pretty standard setup, from what I can tell: girl gets reincarnated into her favorite otome game as the villainess, and ends up unintentionally getting the hero to fall for her. However, it's actually from the perspective of the man, not the girl herself. The story is paced really well and feels like more than just funny tropes mashed together. I suppose I'm not selling it well, but hear me out: Everyone also has really cool clothes 8.7/10

8. Tsurezure Children

Another top 10 favorite for me. It did get an (incomplete) anime, but I've never seen anyone talk about it except for that dumb phone joke with Furuya, so I feel pretty confident in putting it on an "obscure manga" list. School-based romcom, with the twist being that the cast is freaking massive. That's not even all the characters on the cover there. Each character and/or pairing has their own little plotline going on, which are all interconnected very nicely with the others. Some of my favorite romance writing ever is in this manga. I could talk for a long while about this one, but I'll just leave it at that. 9.5/10

9. Bonnouji

Cute manga by the artist for Touhou: Silent Sinner in Blue. A young woman gets dumped by her boyfriend and ends up finding an apartment full of weird and wacky stuff from the owner's travelling brother. They bond over silly stuff and having fun together. Very cute, maybe not that deep but cute nonetheless. 8.1/10

10. Miageru to Kimi wa

Aww look at them ... Anyway, short boy gets rejected by girl, meets cool tall girl, they fall in love? The end if you need more context than that I'm sorry but we can't be friends anymore. 9.1/10

It’s my favorite of Touhou’s bunny girls! Seiran is cute and I was happy she reappeared in Th19. You might notice I gave her some lovely shoes. I found a cosplay of her with those kinds of shoes and I was like “yeah I gotta include these!” Also running around in just socks bothers me cuz they’d get all dirty and nasty. I’m glad ZUN mainly draws shoes now lol

Y'know what? Tumblr, you get a little treat. I don't have much better of a place to post something long-winded like this, so here we are.

I love eurobeat music. Big surprise from the girl with it in her handle, right? But I don't just love one kind of eurobeat. No, I'd go so far as to say I love it all. This genre becomes an absolute buffet of delightful, energetic, silly fun when you forget about trying to look for ways it "doesn't count", and try to look for the ways it does.

I love early eurobeat! I love the stuff that's indistinguishable from early Italo Disco, the formative things where the tempo was still low and the disco vibes were still high! That's Eurobeat and the first few volumes of Super Eurobeat are great for this!

I love later eurobeat, too! Even if some of the sounds aren't always my favorites, I love that folks were trying new things and dabbling with new sounds, experimenting in ways that in previous years seemed prohibited! Comparing some aliases who have been going for multiple decades from this period to when they started is also super fun!

I love traditional eurobeat, if I could pick a name for it! Faster, more rave-influenced, whether or not it's still got some disco elements in it, themes about nightclubs and love and loss and betrayal and that ever-ubiquitous fire! Maharajah Night has some great examples, leading into the bulk of pre-200 Super Eurobeat volumes!

I love J-Euro! It turns out, folks in Japan have different ideas and tastes and approach the genre VERY differently than the folks in Italy do, and I love how it sounds! I love how the sound design is so different and the speed jumps a little higher!

I love indie eurobeat! I love hearing how new and amateur producers take a crack at the sound, and seeing what folks do as the tools for making it grow and evolve! Even virtual versions of the synths the masters used to use are available now, and it's fantastic to hear how those things sound in new hands! I love the ways indie producers bend, break, and work around the rules of the genre and still deliver a uniquely "eurobeat" experience! Without this category, I would never have found DJ Command, DJ Bouche, Turbo, Vikas Beatbox, the Galaxian Recordings crew, and so, so many more!

I love happy eurobeat! The nature of the genre makes it so straightforward to pair its signature energy with joy, delight, empowerment!

I love sad eurobeat! That very same energy that powers joy and happiness can be just as powerful for driving home sorrow and sadness, and some lyrics even carry strong emotional weight (we're well past the days of eurobeat being only about Burning Love Car Baby Fire Desire Tonight Drift Tokyo, y'know)!

I love fandom eurobeat! Yup! Vocaloid, Touhou, MLP:FiM, Vtubers; whatever you may be a fan of, chances are good there's a eurobeat remix out there (or even an original) that suits your fancy!

I love Initial D eurobeat! How could I not, right? The classics are classics for a reason, and eurobeat and drift racing are a uniquely fantastic pair. Of all the things eurobeat could be about, it's one of a few that really knock it out of the park!

I love feminine eurobeat! Masculine eurobeat is great too, but it already gets a lot of love in the other categories, so I want to celebrate those eurobeat songs that feel quite the opposite while still being perfectly eurobeat! Eurobeat is broad enough to express feelings like this, too!

I love songs that aren't quite eurobeat, but have elements of it! And I love eurobeat songs that heavily include elements from other genres, too! Eurobeat is like any other genre-- it has not always had the same chances to rub shoulders with other sounds in the dance space, but when it does, some wonderful things happen! And the whole music world is enriched for that cross-pollenation!

I love the songs I used to dislike! To think I'd go from vastly disliking Norma Sheffield's discography, to adoring it so fully! Disliking "Higher Higher More and More" to seeking it out from time to time! Not being fond of SAIFAM/BBB's style, to knowing some of its songs by heart!

And most of all, I love that I get to MAKE this stuff for a living! I do not take the fact that this could've not worked out trivially, and I hope I've rewarded your patiences well with a lot of new favorites and starting points for diving deeper into the genre over the last... almost 20 years, now!

And that's just the tip of the iceberg! I understand some eurobeat isn't to everyone's taste, but I think if you haven't tasted all that there is out there, you owe it to yourself to see how you feel about it. You might be pleasantly surprised!

HOW WE FEELING ABOUT TOUHOU 20’S DEMO SO FAR

very fun game. the new girls are all pretty fun so far and im enjoying the theming of the game. curious about the new incident, that girl, nareka was it? whatever it was. stage 3 girl. shes really entertaining, definitely my favorite of the bunch so far.

of course though im Mrs Gameplay. the system with the shot types is really interesting! theres some super cool mechanics tied to the stones i think th20 is gonna be great.

Odd people I've interacted with because of my fics.

That guy who messaged me on three separate occasions over the course of seven years asking me to write a Remilia x OC story, each time having forgotten that he had already asked me a few years prior. At least he was polite when I pointed that out.

That one girl asking me to write her a Kaguya x Mokou story for her, only to flip out and call me a racist when I said no.

That guy who kept messaging asking the most random shit, like what powers would Mufasa from the Lion King have if he went to Gensokyo.

That guy who messaged me multiple times every day for a week before I blocked them, each time just saying "hi" and "how are you," with no capitalization or punctuation.

That one dude who kept messaging me under the assumption that I was some kind of man-hating lesbian because of all the yuri. Like, dude. It's Touhou and Madoka Magica. Dafuq are you expecting? Didn't stop him from reading every chapter that I posted only to angrily message me again after every update. Honestly, he was my favorite.

That person that wanted me to write their highly complicated Madoka Magica story for them, complete with a very detailed plot synopsis that stretched over several very long paragraphs.

Might be a pretty basic take by the standards of more seasoned yuri fans, but it's my perspective as someone who's mostly read yuri in a Touhou context (though a lot of it), and exclusively manga from the Japanese fans as opposed to i.e. written fics.

Touhou yuri (using it very broadly here to describe any kind of wlw shipping present) is, across the board, in a pool of fan literature going back twenty years, remarkably good at taking the lesbian part for granted. Not counting outright het content or works that simply don't bring it up, I have only very vague memories of a character's lesbian orientation being either denied or even brought to question (even in the cliche "But we're both girls!" manner, which even as a somewhat dead horse trope you might still expect to see, given plenty of doujin writing isn't exactly highbrow). You might be able to read "Does she like girls?" between the lines in the usual question of "Does she like me?" if you really want to, but the way it's still basically treated as default is fun to me. There's a reason Touhou basically has honorary yuri status on e.g. Dynasty Reader, even the stories with effectively zero shipping in them. You might not notice if you haven't browsed the site, but it's literally nothing but yuri + Touhou. We even got upload rights just so we could post more Touhou.

(Of course, Touhou being yuri city is part of the reason any hint of straight romance gets a really strong kneejerk reaction from people, including me. But that's also because the lack of usable male characters makes that shipping inherently hamfisted, up to and including literally making up cardboard villager OCs. Basically the only positive example I can remember off the top of my head is Hisona's An Old Poem for the Cuckoo Bird depicting Youki with a 1000-year-old mostly joking crush on Nue, which after some chin-scratching I decided I liked alright. And Hisona of course has plenty of yuri cred to cover for it.)

But although taken for granted, most Touhou yuri is one or more of: a.) On a "blushing maidens thinking about holding hands" level in its approach to romance, b.) Only depicting the starting moments of a relationship, at best - usually just pining, c.) Only off-handedly teasing, basically to acknowledge the ship is there, d.) Showing a very close and loving relationship but leaving the romance part subtextual, even if thinly veiled.

While those are all fine - some of my favorite artists like e.g. Ashiyama undeniably fall under d.) - it means that artists who depict more established couples, and couples that get depicted as more established, stand out. I love when a story is very blunt about two characters, whether the focus is actually on them or not, already being an item. Be it due to a difference in target demographic or what, many of these works seem to have a slight lean towards being more raunchy/horny even when not outright R-18, but I don't actually mind that too much when it does happen - as long as they're fun and raunchy, as opposed to only raunchy or, god forbid, unfun in raunchy ways.

I like how Moyazou depicts Mokou and Keine as basically-married. I like how Atoki depicts YuuParu or SakiYachi after drawing like twenty books of them (each). I like when Kawayabug depicts Tojiko as Miko's beleaguered wife. But the example of the day is obviously risui (of Ladies of Scarlet Devil Mansion), who you might have guessed inspired this ramble. Funnily enough, in LoSDM she seems to have walked back Meiling and Sakuya's relationship coincidentally at the same time she toned down the content to fit SCoOW's guidelines, compared to her usual works that have MeiSaku at a much more established and mutual stage.

But the point stands that it's really fun to see LoSDM almost rub it in your face from the very start - from Meiling's dream to every other conversation she has - that everyone in it is unapologetically and openly lesbian, assumes everyone else to be a lesbian, and doesn't hesitate to talk about it like a (romcom idiot) adult.
